Teaching

Learning to play the oboe comes with many unique challenges which require resilience and perseverance; this is why I try to take a holistic approach to teaching. I believe that learning proper technique allows for maximum artistic self-expression, and vice versa; a strong artistic sense of self will motivate a student to strive for technical discipline. Students of all ages and experience levels deserve to find joy in making music with one of the most beautiful instruments. This is something we can discover together with the right repertoire, attitude, and commitment to musicianship. I will meet students wherever they are at in their musical journey, and help them find what they need to take their playing to the next level!

In lessons, we will focus on…

Basic Instrument Technique

Breathing and Posture

Music Theory Fundamentals

Dynamics and Pitch Control

Introduction to Phrasing

Advanced

Refining Phrasing, Tone, and Vibrato

Reedmaking and Audition Preparation

Reedmaking

I encourage any student who is motivated and interested to learn to make their own reeds! Being able to craft your sound "from scratch" can be so rewarding. Sourcing good reeds can be an obstacle for oboe students, and being able to confidently adjust or make your own reeds brings a great feeling of freedom.

I will teach reedmaking to any age or level of student, but I find that the best time for a student to start is usually sometime in high school or beyond, after their playing has started to mature. Making reeds involves a fairly large learning curve, and is best suited for students who are patient, focused, and detail-oriented.
