Reed FAQs
-
If a reed arrives damaged or with a physical defect, and you let me know within one day of arrival, I will replace it for free.
If it simply doesn’t quite meet your needs or expectations, and can’t be improved with minor adjustments, we will work together to figure out what can be adjusted or improved for you in the future, and you’ll receive 50% off one reed in your next purchase.
Please understand that new reeds can change slightly over time, especially if you live in a climate very different from mine. Reeds will also feel a little different for each individual player and instrument. It is normal for you or your teacher to make small adjustments for it to be the best reed it can be for you! -
Send me a message with more details and I can help you try to adjust it. Next time you place an order, we can try a different diameter or tie length.
If the opening is too small, please do not squeeze! I am not able to replace reeds that have cracked due to squeezing. -
Mack++
Narrow shape, makes a smaller, lighter reed.
Gilbert -1
Medium shape with a little more depth. My personal preference.

Keep them clean! About once a week, put the reed cane side-down into a cup of water, and blow into the cork. You might be surprised at what comes out! You can also carefully clean out the inside with a plaque if you have one.
As a reed gets older, you may have to soak it for longer in warmer water. Some “old” reeds may come back to life in hot, humid weather! -
I don’t advertise a particular brand of cane because it changes a lot! Different brands and different batches/harvests of cane always have varying success rates of passing my selection criteria.
You are welcome to specify if you want a certain diameter or if you need a certain size of opening. I almost always use 10.25mm for my Professional reeds, and Student reeds get other sizes with an adjusted tie length.
